Coquina at Astronomical Dawn
Coquina at Astronomical Dawn
The Coquina Rocks near Fort Fisher, North Carolina, are a rare and ancient feature, formed over millennia from compressed seashell fragments. As North Carolina’s only naturally occurring rocky shoreline, these formations stand in stark contrast to the shifting sands around them, creating a dynamic and ever-changing coastal landscape.
Captured during astronomical dawn, this moment marks the final stretch of night before the first light of day. The Sun, still well below the horizon, casts a soft glow along the edge of the Earth, while the Milky Way lingers overhead, moments away from being washed out by the coming sunrise. The result is a fleeting intersection of land, sea, and sky—where the past and present, night and day, exist together for just a little while longer.
